01 What Does AI Search Optimisation Include?

You’ll see the same kind of work sold as GEO (generative engine optimisation), AEO (answer engine optimisation) and AI SEO. Providers use those labels differently, so ask what’s actually in the proposal instead of trusting the name. The comparison below shows how the terms differ in practice.
What’s the Difference Between AI Search Optimisation, AEO and GEO?
There’s no official definition for any of these terms, and they overlap heavily. This is how they’re most commonly used.
| Term | Stands for | Main focus | What it usually means in a quote |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI search optimisation | Umbrella term | Overall discoverability in AI-powered search | SEO plus AEO plus GEO, together with measurement. A quote should cover the whole job: SEO foundations, answer-ready content, prompt testing and reporting. |
| AEO | Answer engine optimisation | Being the direct answer to a question | Clear, short answers under question-style headings, FAQs, and content that suits featured snippets, voice search and AI answer boxes. Usually content rewrites and page structure. |
| GEO | Generative engine optimisation | Being referenced inside AI-generated answers | Making your business easy for AI tools to understand and trust: clear business details, evidence, citations and full topic coverage. Usually prompt testing, mention and citation tracking, and fixing the gaps found. |
| AI SEO | Informal label | Usually the same as the umbrella term | Often used interchangeably with GEO or AI search optimisation. Check the proposal to see what it actually covers. |
SEO is the foundation of all three. Google says its AI features in Search rely on the same basics as ordinary SEO: pages that can be crawled and indexed, helpful content, and clear information about who you are and where you work. See AI features and your website and the SEO Starter Guide.
AEO is mostly about how you write and structure answers. GEO is about testing real AI answers, tracking mentions and citations, and fixing the gaps you find. Neither can guarantee a mention, so treat any provider that promises one with caution.
When you compare quotes, ignore the label and ask what’s delivered: which prompts are tested, which pages are changed and what’s reported. A quote that only covers AEO-style rewrites, or only GEO-style monitoring, is covering part of the job. We use “AI search optimisation” as the umbrella term in this guide.
Typical work includes a baseline check of how your business appears for the questions your customers ask, customer-prompt research, a look at which competitors and sources keep getting named, improvements to your main service pages, FAQs and proof, technical checks such as crawl access and structured data, and ongoing testing and reporting. Some of that is already part of a decent SEO retainer, which is why the cost conversation matters.
For the practical side of each platform, read our guides to getting found on ChatGPT in Australia and ranking in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. To choose which customer questions are worth testing first, start with our AI search prompt mapping guide.
| Deliverable | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Baseline | Which prompts and AI platforms are checked, the date, and what the business looks like today |
| Analysis | Competitor mentions, cited sources and content gaps |
| Implementation | Which pages or assets will actually be changed, and by whom |
| Reporting | Findings, limitations and next actions, and how often you receive them |
| Exclusions | What costs extra, such as new pages, development or digital PR |
02 AI Search Optimisation Costs in Australia

There’s no standard Australian price list for this work yet. Published offers vary because agencies bundle different things under the same label: one sells a monthly report, another rewrites your key pages and tracks five AI platforms. The ranges below are planning guides based on publicly advertised offers we reviewed in 2026 and typical differences in scope. They aren’t an industry average, a quote or a promise of results.
| Service type | Indicative budget | Usually suited to |
|---|---|---|
| DIY or software-only tracking | $50–$500/month | Businesses with in-house time to act on the results |
| Focused AI visibility audit | $500–$1,500 one-off | A baseline, the main gaps and a prioritised plan |
| Add-on to an existing SEO retainer | $250–$800/month | Extra prompt tracking and page improvements |
| Small-business monthly programme | $500–$2,000/month | Local and service businesses with a handful of core pages |
| Typical agency retainer (as advertised) | $1,500–$5,000/month | More platforms, more content, more strategy time |
| Enterprise, multi-market or large catalogue | $5,000–$20,000+/month | Big sites, many locations or competitive national markets |
Always confirm whether a quote includes GST, content writing, development time, reporting tools and the number of AI platforms or prompts checked. If you’re also weighing up traditional SEO, our guide to SEO costs in Sydney shows how the two budgets relate.
03 What Affects the Price of GEO Services?
- Size and condition of the website, and how many service pages need work.
- Number of services and locations you want to be found for.
- How strong the competition is in your market.
- Number of prompts and AI platforms tested, and how often.
- Whether the agency writes and publishes content or only recommends it.
- Technical work such as crawl access, structured data and page speed.
- Depth of reporting and how much strategy time is included.
- Whether the work is bundled with an existing SEO retainer.
The biggest question is implementation. A report can identify issues, but somebody still has to update the pages, publish the content and fix the technical problems. Ask whether the fee covers doing the work or only describing it.
Location matters too. A small business with one service area and a handful of core pages needs far less than a company covering many suburbs, each with its own proof and local detail. Our Sydney service areas page shows how we think about local coverage.
AI search optimisation can complement your existing SEO strategy and wider digital marketing services in Sydney, helping your business build visibility across traditional search engines and AI-powered platforms.
04 Sydney WEB team AI Visibility Packages

Our packages are designed for Australian small businesses that want a clear scope and a sensible starting price. Prices are in AUD and exclude GST. The prompt counts are the maximum we track, not a guarantee of mentions or rankings.
| Package | Price (ex GST) | Scope snapshot | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Visibility Audit | $590 once | 20 prompts, 3 competitors, 90-day action plan | A diagnosis before committing to monthly work |
| Starter | $490/month | 25 prompts, 3 competitors, 1 priority page | Monitoring plus one focused improvement |
| Growth | $790/month | 50 prompts, 5 competitors, up to 2 priority pages | Active, ongoing improvement |
| Advanced | $1,290/month | 100 prompts, 8 competitors, up to 4 priority pages | Several services or tougher competition |
AI Visibility Audit, $590 one-off. A focused baseline of up to 20 buyer prompts, a review of up to three competitors, the priority website gaps and a 90-day action plan. It makes the next steps clear. It doesn’t promise that AI tools will cite you.
AI Visibility Starter, $490/month. Track up to 25 agreed prompts, review up to three competitors, check the agreed AI search experiences monthly, improve one existing priority page within scope and receive a concise monthly report. Month 1 sets the baseline and priorities, month 2 improves one agreed page, and month 3 retests and recommends next steps.
AI Visibility Growth, $790/month. Track up to 50 prompts, review up to five competitors, test the agreed platforms, improve up to two priority pages a month, prepare one answer-focused content improvement or brief, and receive monthly findings and next actions.
AI Visibility Advanced, $1,290/month. Track up to 100 prompts, review up to eight competitors, get broader citation and content-gap analysis, improve up to four priority pages a month and hold a monthly strategy review. Larger development tasks, extensive new articles, new pages at scale and digital PR are quoted separately.
05 What Should a Quality GEO Package Include?
- A baseline with the date, platforms and exact prompt list.
- A stable prompt set tied to commercially important questions.
- Named platforms, so you know what’s being tested.
- Documented competitor and cited-source observations.
- Specific page-level actions, not general advice.
- A clear split between what the agency does and what you do.
- Transparent reporting that separates observed facts from assumptions.
- An explanation of how progress will be judged.
For the pages themselves, expect clear service descriptions, direct answers to customer questions, original experience or evidence where you have it, consistent business details, useful about and author information, and pages search systems can crawl. Google’s guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content is a fair yardstick. Structured data can also help search systems understand a page, and Google documents what it supports in its introduction to structured data. It isn’t a shortcut to being mentioned.
06 Adding AI Search Optimisation to Existing SEO
If you already pay for SEO, review your current agreement before buying anything new. Technical SEO, page optimisation, local business information and conversion improvements may already be included. Don’t pay for a second package that renames the same work.
| Work item | Often already in a good SEO retainer? | Genuinely extra for AI visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Crawling, indexing and technical fixes | Usually included | Checking AI-specific crawler access |
| Service page optimisation | Often included | Rewriting pages around the questions AI tools are asked |
| Local details and Google Business Profile | Often included | Checking consistency across the sources AI tools cite |
| Prompt set and AI answer testing | Rarely included | Yes, this is new work |
| Competitor and citation log | Rarely included | Yes, this is new work |
| Dedicated AI visibility reporting | Rarely included | Yes, this is new work |
An extra AI-search fee makes sense when it covers genuinely additional work: building and maintaining a prompt set, testing multiple AI experiences, documenting competitor mentions and citations, analysing patterns and reporting separately. For existing SEO clients, a limited add-on of around $250–$350 a month can cover tracking and reporting, $390–$590 adds page improvements, and $590–$790 or more suits substantial implementation. These are suggested bands, not automatic surcharges. If your retainer already covers the work, ask for it to be included, or pay only for the extra effort.

07 Audit vs Monthly Retainer: Which Is Right for You?
| Comparison | One-off audit | Monthly retainer |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | A diagnosis, or a team that can implement the fixes itself | Recurring checks, implementation and learning over time |
| You get | A baseline, the key gaps and a prioritised plan | Ongoing testing, page improvements and reporting |
| Commitment | One-off | Monthly, reviewed after 90 days |
| You need | Someone to act on the plan | A little time for approvals and feedback |
| Main risk | The plan sits unused | Paying for activity that doesn’t move priorities |
A one-off audit suits businesses that want a diagnosis, have staff to implement recommendations, or aren’t ready for an ongoing commitment. It should give you a baseline, the main gaps and a plan you can act on.
A monthly retainer suits businesses that need recurring checks and ongoing implementation. AI answers change and content improvements take time to assess, so monthly work should follow a consistent process rather than promise instant visibility.

08 How AI Search Optimisation Work Is Measured
Use repeatable measures: the share of agreed prompts where the business is mentioned, whether it’s recommended in relevant contexts, which pages or sources are cited, competitor appearances, and changes to the underlying website content. Record the platform, date, location where relevant and the exact prompt wording each time.
| Metric | What it tells you | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mentions | Whether the business appeared in tested answers | Responses can vary between runs |
| Cited pages | Which sources were referenced | Not every platform shows sources |
| AI referral visits | Visits arriving from AI tools | Only some tools pass a recognisable referrer |
| Organic engagement | Website visits and interactions | Doesn’t prove AI caused them |
| Qualified enquiries | Business outcomes | Track with sensible analytics and ask new customers how they found you |
Two official sources help with the technical side. OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers FAQ explains that ChatGPT search referrals carry a recognisable UTM parameter, so you can segment them in analytics, and that OAI-SearchBot must not be blocked if you want content considered for ChatGPT search. Google’s AI features guidance covers how its AI experiences relate to Search Console reporting.
AI responses vary between runs, accounts, regions and features, so treat prompt tests as directional observations, not a stable ranking report. In our prompt mapping guide we show a real example where one question page earned most of a site’s Google AI impressions while producing few clicks. That’s visibility, not leads, so we report the two separately.
09 What to Expect in the First 90 Days

| Stage | Work | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–30 | Baseline and prioritisation | Prompt set and action plan |
| Days 31–60 | Page and content improvements | Documented changes |
| Days 61–90 | Re-test and review | Findings and next priorities |
Days 1–30: establish the baseline. Agree goals, choose commercially relevant prompts, test the chosen AI search platforms, review competitors and identify the biggest content or evidence gaps. The Audit delivers recommendations and a roadmap, while monthly packages begin implementation within their limits.
Days 31–60: make focused improvements. Update the agreed priority pages, sharpen answers and supporting evidence, and fix relevant on-site SEO issues where included. New pages, extensive article writing and major development are scoped separately unless the proposal lists them.
Days 61–90: re-test and refine. Repeat the agreed prompts, compare them with the baseline, review website engagement and enquiry data, and choose the next actions.
10 Local Businesses in Sydney and NSW: What Changes?
Many customer questions are local: who can do this near me, who services my suburb, what does it cost in Sydney, and are there NSW rules I should know about. Local intent changes both the work and the price, because AI tools lean on the same local signals people do.
- “Who’s a reliable [service] near [suburb]?”
- “How much does [service] cost in Sydney?”
- “Do you cover [area], and how quickly can you start?”
- “Are there NSW licences, council approvals or rules I should check first?”
- “Which [service] business has proof it does good work locally?”
What usually matters: an accurate and complete Google Business Profile, service-area pages that are genuinely useful rather than near-identical copies, real reviews and project proof, and consistent business details wherever you’re listed. Our Sydney service areas page and Sydney SEO service explain how we approach this.
11 Example: Choosing a Package for a Sydney Business
Imagine a Sydney plumbing business with one core service area and a small website. It might begin with the $590 audit to see which buyer questions aren’t answered clearly, then choose the $490 Starter plan if it mainly needs monitoring and one improvement a month. If it wants active work on two priority pages, more competitor analysis and a monthly content improvement, the $790 Growth package is likely a better fit. If it serves many suburbs or needs new pages at scale, scope the extra work separately instead of pretending the same price covers everything.
| Business type | Likely starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small trade business, one service area | Audit, then Starter | A few core pages and a limited set of buyer questions |
| Professional services firm with several services | Growth | More pages, more comparison questions and more proof to build |
| Multi-location business or large catalogue | Advanced, plus a separate quote | Many pages and locations need their own scope |

12 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a GEO Agency
- What exactly is delivered each month? Please put it in writing.
- Which AI platforms and how many prompts do you check, and how often?
- Who makes the changes: you or us? Is that included in the fee?
- How do you choose prompts? Are they based on my customers’ real questions?
- Can I see a sample report?
- How do you handle answers that change between runs?
- What costs extra, such as new pages, development or digital PR?
- Does this overlap with my current SEO retainer?
- What happens if the audit shows my main problem is ordinary SEO or weak service pages?
- Who owns the prompt set, reports and content if I leave?
Be wary of promised citations, unlimited work, vague metrics or screenshots you can’t verify. Under the Australian Consumer Law, businesses shouldn’t make false or misleading claims and should be able to back up what they say. The ACCC explains the rules in its guidance on false or misleading claims. A guarantee of a ChatGPT or Google AI mention is exactly the kind of claim to ask a provider to substantiate.
Also ask how confidential customer and business information is handled, and whether the provider will separate observations from claims in its reports.
13 How to Avoid Paying Twice for SEO and GEO
- Technical fixes: already in your SEO contract, or genuinely new?
- Local SEO and business listings: covered already?
- Page optimisation: the same pages being rewritten twice?
- Reporting: a second report that repeats the first?
- Content: who owns the new copy, and is it priced once?
Whoever you hire, a good provider will tell you honestly when your existing SEO already covers the work. We’d rather scope the extra effort fairly than sell you a renamed package. If you’re comparing budgets, our SEO cost guide is a useful reference point.
14 Is AI Search Optimisation Worth the Investment?
It can be, but not for every business at every stage. It tends to make sense when your customers research a considered purchase before contacting anyone, you already have clear service pages to improve, and you can handle more enquiries.
It’s probably too early if your website is thin or out of date, you don’t track enquiries yet, or you can’t deliver more work. In that case, fix the foundations first. Our small business website guide and website management service are better starting points.
There’s also a DIY route: a spreadsheet, a fixed set of 15 to 30 prompts and consistent manual tests are enough for a baseline, and paid tracking tools start at around $50 a month. An agency adds the most value when you need analysis, page improvements and reporting done for you.
A simple way to test the maths: multiply the monthly fee by three for a 90-day review, then divide by the profit from one new customer. At $790 a month and $1,000 profit per customer, that’s about 2.4 extra customers over the first 90 days to break even. Nobody can promise that outcome, so treat it as a threshold, not a forecast.
15 Pricing and Scope: Final Checklist
- Written list of deliverables and what’s excluded.
- How prompts are selected, and which AI platforms are checked.
- How often testing happens and what the report looks like.
- Whether the work is implemented or only recommended.
- Which tasks cost extra, and whether GST is included.
- No guaranteed citations, rankings or recommendations.
- No overlap with the SEO work you already pay for.
- A review point, such as after 90 days, with a clear way to change or stop.
Choose the smallest package that can reasonably close your priority gaps, then review it after the first 90 days. Ask for an example of the report you’ll receive, and ask what happens if the audit shows the main issue is ordinary SEO, weak evidence or missing service information rather than a separate GEO problem.
16 AI Search Optimisation Cost FAQs
How much does AI search optimisation cost in Australia?
Software-only AI visibility tracking often costs from about $50 to $500 a month, while advertised agency retainers commonly start around $1,500 to $2,000 a month and rise from there. Smaller audits and add-ons for local businesses cost less. Sydney WEB team’s packages are an AI Visibility Audit at $590 one-off and monthly plans at $490, $790 and $1,290, all ex GST.
What is the difference between GEO, AEO and AI SEO?
The terms overlap heavily. GEO usually refers to being understood and referenced in AI-generated answers, AEO to being the direct answer to a question, and AI SEO is a general label. Providers use them differently, so ask what the proposal actually delivers.
Is GEO different from SEO?
They share foundations: clear pages, helpful content and a site search systems can crawl. GEO adds prompt research, testing how AI tools answer, tracking mentions and citations, and fixing the gaps that testing reveals.
Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT or Google AI will mention my business?
No. AI answers vary between runs, accounts and platforms, so nobody can honestly guarantee a mention or recommendation. Be cautious of any provider that does.
Do I need an audit before a monthly package?
Not always, but an audit is a sensible first step if you’re unsure where the gaps are or you don’t want an ongoing commitment yet. It gives you a baseline and a prioritised plan.
How long does it take to see results?
AI answers change and content improvements take time to assess. A 90-day review is a sensible checkpoint for comparing results with your baseline, but there’s no fixed timeline and no guaranteed outcome.
If I already pay for SEO, do I need to pay extra?
Possibly a little. Review your contract line by line. If AI-specific work like prompt testing, citation tracking and separate reporting isn’t included, a limited add-on may be reasonable. Don’t pay twice for work your SEO retainer already covers.
Is AI search optimisation worth it for a small local business?
It can be if your customers research before they enquire and you have clear service pages to improve. Start with the smallest scope that closes your priority gaps, and review it after 90 days.
Do your prices include GST?
No. Our package prices are in AUD and exclude GST.
How do I know if AI tools can access my website?
Check that your robots.txt file isn’t blocking the crawlers you want. OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers FAQ says OAI-SearchBot must not be blocked for content to be considered for ChatGPT search, and Google explains how its AI features relate to normal Search eligibility in its AI features guidance. Our free AI visibility checker gives you an initial look.
